Constructed in 1894 and consecrated in 1900, the Sacred Heart of Jesus church is the only other functioning building, besides a few houses, in Bueyeros. Bueyeros is a small mountain town, with less than 50 full-time residents.
The church is still used. We found the sign on the outhouse door humorous, but it is necessary, as we found on the day we visited. Taking photos was challenging, as the wind was blowing so hard across the open plain behind that it threatened to take the cameras out of our hands. You can see from the photo that the door is no stranger to being buffeted by wind.
The stone construction is unusual for Northern NM. We found this church to be a lovely beacon on the otherwise open landscape.
