The town where we live is Oakey, a small town in Queensland, Australia with a population, according to the 2011 census, of 4529 people.
Oakey was surveyed in 1868 and it gets its name from the the river oaks that are dotted along the banks of the creek that runs through town.
The area was first settled in 1840 when some pastoralists moved to the area and found suitable grazing land.
Oakey is well known for the Army Aviation Centre situated on the outskirts of town.
Originally an Air Force base constructed in 1943, it was transferred to Army control in 1969.
The centre is home to what is said to be the best aviation museum in Australia.
Oakey’s other claim to fame is that it was home to one of Australia’s most famous racehorses, Bernborough.
We moved here in Feb/Mar 2018 so really are the newcomers in town.
Why did we choose Oakey? The quiet country lifestyle. Small enough to be a quiet haven from the world and yet close enough to the city of Toowoomba to be able to access everything we could possibly need.
