Feathered Friends

We live close to a nature preserve, and there is a big family (called a “muster”) of peacocks that leaves the preserve and strolls through the neighborhood almost every day. They are beloved in our area, having been residents here for over 50 years. I was driving to the grocery store and saw a group of them in one of my neighbor's yards. I'm presenting a series of these photos, to give more of a flavor of their behavior.

They are a mixed male/female group, with of course the males being much more colorful. They do fly up to the rooftops and back down to the ground, quite impressive when the big males do it with their long tails. They think nothing of hopping up on cars, roofs, fences - and no one minds. We even have “peacock crossing” signs in the neighborhood to remind people to be on the lookout for our feathered friends and neighbors.

From a photography perspective, perhaps the second photo, of the peacock on the roof, is better composed; the one I chose does have the second peacock sort of encroaching in the picture. But the preening male looked like he was posing for me, so I obliged!

Project 365 11Jan10 - This male peacock was preening while others were looking for food.

Up on the rooftop.

Look at me!

It's common for groups of peacocks to stroll through yards in our neighborhood like this.

Another group shot.

Female peacock on top of a car!

When I approached to take a picture, one female flew up to the roof of the garage.

You can see that there are 10 peacocks, males and females, in this shot. I included it to show how many birds typically stroll together in our neighborhood..
