I read a facebook post this morning which really mystified me. A person was saying that they are thinking of moving to Panama but can they get all their usual American products here, which sounded like they were wanting to uproot all their American supermarkets and speciality stores and plant them in Panama. This got me to thinking...... I know we all have our favourite eats, drinks and products but surely if you are wanting to make a drastic change, such as moving to a brand new country then mustn’t one embrace their ways including their eats, drinks and products and of course, language ?
Obviously medicine can be a life or death situation, but most medicines are obtainable here or can be sent in from the USA. But basic things like food and drinks etc, most everything is readily available here. Depending on your budget, there are even different types of supermarkets that offer different items, prices and quality.
Since moving to Panama, we have made a concerted effort to embrace the change so when we go shopping (bearing in mind most of the product labelling is in Spanish),we wander up and down the aisles looking at what Panama has to offer. Since I am a vegetarian, this makes things a tad more interesting but thankfully beans are a plenty. To date, I have only found tins of soya ‘frankfurters” and soya ‘mortadella” (type of cold meat) which are both delicious. There are no ready made vegetarian frozen alternatives here like Fry’s or Quorn. In fact, there are actually very few frozen any things here and if you do find them they are very expensive. Food here is more fresh than frozen. I was actually saying to a new friend last weekend that we have been so fortunate, all the new eats that we have tried or cooked have in fact been delicious (and as previously mentioned most labelling is in Spanish only) so life is never dull.
I hope that this post gets you thinking about the changes that you want to make in your life perhaps for the holidays or for the new year.
Do you want to make a change or maybe just an alteration to your lives. That, my friend, only you answer.
Sending love after another amazing week in Panama. Feel free to share my posts and ask any questions that you may have.
Much love, Fleetingtime
