What is your purpose ?

Our purpose : born with it or grow into it ?

Some of us are lucky enough to be born with our purpose and some of us need to take some time to discover it. Then there is the third group, that wishes that someone would send them a text message and just plainly tell them – this would save so much time and self reflection.

'What is our purpose' has been the topic of many debates, books and many other forms of media but none of us have a definitive answer. Some groups would debate that our purpose is to reach perfection and then we pass onto the next plain. But how do we as humans ever reach this state, since humans are by their very nature imperfect beings. And then that sentence sparks off another huge debate and in some cases a heated one. So let us move on.

Many of us on a certain path due to our circumstances whether this be financial or otherwise. We are where we are and we make the best of it. But many times, that status quo becomes disrupted. Perhaps the death of a loved one forces us to re-evaluate or we ourselves become sick which causes a glitch in the system. Whatever the catalyst, we press pause and sit on a park bench and wait for clarity to form in our jumbled brains.

There are many purpose categories which we could choose from but does this help our question or hinder it further. If someone had to come up to us and say “Apple or Orange”, would that not be easier ?

Since childhood, I have had a purpose between my schooling and part time job. Upon reaching adulthood, I knew that further studies would not be possible due to financial restraints so I knew that I would have to find a permanent job and that became my next purpose. Work has always been my passion and purpose.

When I was working the corporate world in my beautiful hi heels, I always knew that I was meant to be doing what I was doing. I was fortunate enough to meet amazing people along the way who mentored me and became lifelong friends. In my own little way, I felt I added value and made others loads lighter.

When I received the opportunity to take my photography passion full time, I moved into my next purpose working long days and even longer weeks between running my own company and studying part time to become a better photographer and editor.

Upon moving to our new country, circumstances have shifted me into another purpose. A purpose to teach yoga classes to all ages, stages and even nationalities.

So perhaps at the end of the day, we do not have ONE purpose but rather many. Since we as humans are multi-faceted, multi-talented and multi-skilled our purpose can shift as our life changes. Maybe the better question to ask would be ‘what is my purpose right now?’

Jonny Lee Miller gives a captivating monologue at the beginning of “Elementary : Season 2 Episode 7:

“I often wonder if I should have been born at another time. My senses are unusually, some might say unnaturally keen, and ours is an era of distraction. It's a punishing drumbeat of constant input. It follows us into our homes and into our beds. It seeps into our... Into our souls, for want of a better word.”

So often during my life I have wondered if I was born in the correct century or the correct country. This can spur yet another debate about reincarnation and the likes but I often think about this and wonder how things could have been if I had been born in a quieter time, a simpler time. Or where I would be now if I had been born in a different country.

There are so many what if questions and what if answers. But at the end of the day the plain truth is, that I am here now. So now is what I deal with, now is what I am meant to be doing and now is all I have that is real and certain. Tomorrow we will handle when it comes and yesterday is long gone.

So to sum up my rather long rambling, let your purpose unfold as it is meant to be.

I would love to hear from you, so pop me a comment below.

Much Love,

Jennifer (Yoga Teacher & Photographer)
