The short and simple answer would be no. If you want to live in China, one is able to cope with the basics without understanding or speaking any Chinese.

It is very hard to describe what it feels like to live in a country where nothing is understandable. Where everything from signage, to instructions, to menus, to maps, to well, everything is in a different language but if you face things with a positive attitude and a good sense of humour then you will do just fine.

Most websites and apps allow for an English option, so that helps a lot. We managed to download an English version of the Didi (taxi) service as well as an English online shopping site.

For our daily living, we get by with basic logic and our translator app. But if you are wanting to go to hospital, rent apartments etc or anything more serious, then having a Chinese friend/colleague along to help is the best plan.

Have a beautiful happy day.
