I wasn??t hopeful of finding any candid people shots in Chichester today as it was so cold that everyone was going about their business as quickly as possible to keep warm. However, I knew my best chances were going to be around the Market Cross. It??s a well known meeting point in Chichester ?? the obvious place to meet as it provides some protection from the elements and has somewhere to sit while you wait. This chap was quietly sitting there with his lunch, completing a crossword and I liked the way he was so obviously away in a world all of his own. I stood there for what felt like an eternity, waiting for the background beyond him to clear (while trying to be subtle and inconspicuous with my SLR and largish lens!) and this was the best frame I captured. I wonder if he solved all the clues?.

Really nice portrait. Big lens - pros and cons, very conspicuous but you can back off a bit! - I remember you could get a mirror attachment to shoot through 90 degrees!!!

Great stealthy capture, Helen! He must be a big fan of crossword puzzles to sit and work in the cold....and no gloves!

Good result - I like the rich dark tones of the main subject contrasted against the lighter, out-of-focus background

Great shot for the theme, especially in black and white. Like you, I always feel very conspicuous taking photographs of other people. A trick I learnt was to stand husband/children near to the person to make it look as though I was taking a picture of them!
