It's all in the details

The Goodwood Festival of Speed is taking place again this weekend and I made the most of a free morning to get up to Goodwood House for the start of the event today. By setting off at 7am I was able to get to the Festival??s enormous central sculpture (a tribute to Lotus cars) in about 45 minutes and made the most of the glorious early morning light. I did take some shots of the entire sculpture but every single frame either had a photographer standing in the wrong place or the sun had dipped behind a cloud, making for some rather dull lighting. My best pictures of it were detail shots, picking out one or two of the cars, often from unusual angles. From there I headed for the Formula 1 paddock and onto the Concourse d??elegance where, once again, I found I had more success shooting details than complete cars. By midday my time was up so I started the long trek back to my car and headed off to work. All is not lost though as I get to go back again tomorrow, this time for the whole day. You have been warned ?? there will be more cars here tomorrow!

This year's central sculpture features six classic Lotus racing cars running around a vast track in the sky.

Being able to get right underneath the sculpture allows for some creative compositions and unusual angles!

Mika Hakkinen's 1998 McLaren F1 car's nose which was resting on the floor at the side of the team's garage this morning.

Infiniti had their latest concept car at the Festival and I loved it's strong lines - such fun to photograph.

Another abstract from the Infiniti.

the badge from a limited edition 4x4 that Infiniti are producing. Named after a certain F1 driver as Infiniti are one of the Red Bull team's current sponsors.

The many edges on the wings of this year's Red Bull F1 car made for an unusual abstract.

The grill of a Ferrari California. You can just see my reflection in the prancing horse's body if you look closely!

A Ford GT40 - I love the strong lines created by the paint job and and body work joins, along with the texture in the old paint.

I love the sculpture, especially with the blue sky behind it, and the head light of the Infiniti concept car looks almost organic... great shot!
