Olympic fever reaches Guildford

Having missed the Olympic Torch relay when it came through on Chichester on Monday I finally caught up with it in Guildford this evening. Friary Guildford Brass Band [friaryguildfordband.co.uk] were playing beside the route, entertaining the public as they waited, so I took lots of photos of them. It was also a great spot for people watching and it occurred to me that only in England would you ever see a man wearing Union Jack deely-bobbers! I managed to wriggle into a front row position for the torch relay itself but sadly there were so many people trying to do the same thing that I couldn??t get a clean shot as it came past. However, I did manage to get a shot of Kevin and our friend Emma with their inflatable torches and I think they make a very good substitute for the real thing!

Kevin leading the trombone section.

It would appear that dark glasses are a requirement to play front row cornet!

FGB get to play in all the best venues!

Duncan on the tuba

The euphonium section

The back row cornets

Pegs come in very handy for holding the music in place when you're playing outside.

I can't imagine seeing this particular scene anywhere except in England. Occasions like this bring out all the great British eccentrics!

Waiting patiently for the torch to arrive.

This little girl had brought her own home-made torch along and was deep in thought as she waited for the real thing to arrive.

This dog was very friendly and obligingly looked straight into my lens as I took his photo.

Emma and Kevin with their inflatable torches!

Love the dog! But I must say, your eccentrics seem exceedingly normal. Perhaps it is just me. Cheers!

I love the atmosphere - great pics of band and especially the dog - sadly we were away when the torch was carried though our patch - well done.
