The posh frock (theme)

by Helen Hooker February. 13, 2013 6331 views

For today??s ??creative self portrait?? theme I thought I??d give my new posh frock, bought for concerts with the Parnassian Ensemble [parnassianensemble.com], its first airing, especially as I??ll generally be doing something creative with my recorder when I??m wearing it. I know that??s bending the theme a little but the logic works for me! Self portraits are one of those things I like the idea of but I also find them hugely frustrating. This single photo was the penultimate shot of eighty frames I took this afternoon. I shot them in batches of four or five frames, varying my posture slightly between shots, then checking the camera to see what had worked. It??s so irritating when you find that perfect pose then realise your hair??s sticking out at an odd angle or a strap is showing where it shouldn??t be then, of course, it??s almost impossible to recreate the posture that worked so well when you try again. And that??s not taking into account the small matter of how to get your eyes in focus when you can??t see the back of the camera at the moment you take the shot! Once I??d finally caught a photo I was happy with I then had to decide whether to go for colour or monochrome. Having spent some time converting the shot in Silver Efex Pro I now can??t decide which I prefer so I??ve posted both ?? I??ll be interested to hear which you all prefer. I??m leaning towards colour at the moment but that could change by the end of the day! It??ll be fascinating to see what everyone else has come up with today ?? many thanks to Tom [photoblog.com]for setting the theme and to Dan [photoblog.com]for encouraging lots of PB-ers to take part via the forum [photoblog.com]so we can all see each other.

Making a good self-portrait is quite difficult, we all know that. But you did a great job Helen.

I am going to make an exception. Portraits for me are in BW: they possess, more power

Lovely dress and trying to look natural pose . I like the colour one but think if you had moved slightly to not quite full on but nearly would be better. IMHO

Yes the colour version for me to Oh La La as they say.

I also agree that the colour version is more effective. A different green filter may not have made such a startling contrast of the crease in your arm. Oh, and very nice "posh frock".

J'aime aussi la photo en couleur !! jolie posture, une certaine dignité, avec beaucoup d'élégance ! Bravo !
ce n'est guère facile de se photographier toute seule !!

I think the colour one is the best. I like the sideways pose rather than looking straight into the camera. This would be a good shot to use for a concert programme :-)

Colour, 100%. And as you said, this is not an easy task to achieve.

Helen ... you look stunning!
I prefer the colour, the natural feel of the wooden recorder, the pretty opal(?) ring and your pendant.
You are very glamourous.
