One of our reasons for visiting Lincolnshire this week was to see the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight [raf.mod.uk] aircraft on their home turf at RAF Coningsby. We've seen the BBMF Lancaster, Spitfires and Hurricanes in action in the skies above Goodwood many times but it was a real privilege to be able to see these magnificent feats of engineering at close quarters. During our comprehensive guided tour we were introduced to all the different aircraft and it was fascinating to see the RAF engineers at work maintaining the aircraft ready for their next display. After lunch we moved on to the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre [lincsaviation.co.uk] at the former wartime RAF airfield at East Kirkby. The museum's biggest star is another Lancaster called Just Jane. The BBMF Lancaster is the only one in Europe which is still in flying condition (the only other flying Lancaster in the world is based in Canada) but Just Jane has been restored to the point where she does regular taxi runs down the museum's runway. Let's hope one day they are able to restore her to the point where she can take to the skies again.
