I tagged along with Kevin to Ely today and took a leisurely stroll around the cathedral while he had a business meeting. Ely Cathedral [elycathedral.org] is a wonderfully beautiful piece of architecture, especially its unique octagonal roof lantern. However, the lighting was quite flat this morning and I found myself struggling to find the inspiration to take interesting photos and I departed after an hour feeling rather disappointed. After running a few errands and eating lunch I had an hour to kill before I met back up with Kevin so I decided to return to the Cathedral, this time limiting myself to just my nifty-fifty lens. What a difference I found awaiting me. In the intervening couple of hours the sun had moved around the Cathedral and walls which had looked flat and uninteresting before were now looking positively sculptural thanks to shafts of light coming through the stained glass windows. My eureka moment came when I reached the organ, where I found two of the ornamental angels picked out in a puddle of light - photographic magic!
