Dodging the crowds

Kevin and I returned to the RAF Museum [rafmuseum.org.uk] in Hendon today, almost four years after our last visit. The museum was heaving with parents and young children enjoying their half term holiday, like us, so it took some patience to get some of the photos I was after. Noticing a lull in proceedings I lined myself up in front of the Lancaster bomber to capture a wide shot of it from below. Of course, as soon as I knelt down the world and its mother walked into my frame - typical! My patience paid off though and after a few minutes wait the crowds cleared and I managed to fire off three frames before yet more children swarmed into view.

Good things come to those who wait - despite the efforts of dozens of children around the museum I eventually got my shot of the Lancaster!

With an aircraft as big as the Lancaster capturing a complete portrait is a huge challenge so I had to do it in installments!

An Airspeed Oxford. Kevin's grandparents used to work for Airspeed in Portsmouth making Oxfords. It would be lovely to think they had a part in making this one but sadly the display next to it said it was made in Coventry!

Only one aircraft has a wing tip as beautifully shaped as this one - the iconic Supermarine Spitfire.

Gloster Gladiator

Love these pics - especially the Spitfire. Beautiful eye detail. Some day come visit me in Ohio and we can shoot at the USAF Museum.

We would have made a great team. You with the camera, and me kicking the kids mercilessly to move on. ha ha Kidding, mostly. Great shots!

What a wonderful place, last time we went to Hendon, John was 9 days overdue to be born, my parents were with us and we had a great time in spite of my vast proportions. He was born the following day! Love the Spitfire, such a distinctive old bird and even just the wing tip is instantly recognisable!
