City of London Churches - St. Botolphe without Bishopsgate

I've felt for some time that I could do with a photographic project to work on. Inspired by Riyaz's photo of St. Bartholomew's Church [photoblog.com] earlier this week I hit upon the subject I was looking for - the many churches which are hidden away in the City of London. Following the reconstruction of the city after the Great Fire of London in 1666 there were no less than 75 churches in the Square Mile of the City of London. Falling numbers of worshippers during the 19th century led to a number of them being demolished and the bombings of World War II took their toll, with 23 churches being badly damaged or destroyed. Even so, there are still 42 churches within the City of London today - that should provide me with plenty of photographic fodder!

I started off my project today with a church which rejoices in the name of St. Botolph without Bishopsgate [botolph.org.uk]. I've passed this church many times on my walk from Liverpool Street to Bank without ever having looked inside. It's an imposing brick built structure, although I found it rather tricky to find a really good shot of it from outside without pedestrians and buses getting in the way. Inside there were no end of interesting details to photograph in the limited time I had available this morning and I was particularly taken with the new stained glass window unveiled in 1997 to mark the restoration of the church after it was badly damaged by an IRA bombs which exploded nearby in 1993.

St Botolphe's stands just across the street from one of the City's more modern structures - the Heron Tower

The church's most recent addition - a window to commemorate its reconstruction following the IRA bombs in 1993

There are interesting looking characters everywhere!

Great series. I know how difficult getting those shots with all the city traffic.
