At the going down of the sun and in the morning....

Since the 5th August the moat at the Tower of London [poppies.hrp.org.uk] has been gradually filling with red ceramic poppies. This remarkable installation is the brainchild of ceramicist Paul Cummins [poppies.hrp.org.uk] who had the idea of making a poppy for every British military fatality during World War I as a tribute to coincide with the centenary of the start of the war. By Armistice Day, on 11th November, there will be 888,246 flowers filling the moat. I popped by to take a look on my way home today and it's already a very arresting sight. I was astonished by the number of people who had evidently come along, like me, to take a look and it's quite apparent that it's an idea that has caught the public's imagination. The light was quite flat today so the sweeping shots I took of the moat were somewhat underwhelming but this particular image still caught my eye when I sorted through them. Given that we have over two months still to go I can see it's going to be a truly awe inspiring sight when all the flowers are in place and I will definitely be returning to take some more photos another day.
