It's all in the eyes

When I last visited Colchester Zoo I discovered the chimpanzees right at the end of the day when the light had long since gone. The sun was shining as I passed by today, on my way home from a rehearsal nearby, so I popped in with my camera and made a beeline for the chimps. They were all indoors as their outdoor enclosure is being rebuilt and this gave me lots of opportunities for some close up portraits. There's something so thoughtful and expressive about their eyes that I found it hard to drag myself away to visit the rest of the zoo. However, it was worth the walk when I reached the meerkats and found them sitting in the glow of the late afternoon sun.

This is Billy-Joe, the matriarch of the chimpanzee family at Colchester. She came to the zoo in 1983 and, now a great-grandmother, she's in her early forties.
