Wings across the sea

The Red Arrows

The Eastbourne airshow entertains the crowds on Eastbourne beach, over the course of a long weekend each August.  However, the serious photographers all head for the dizzy heights of Beachy Head, a couple of miles down the coast, as many of the aircraft fly in past the cliffs, offering a unique view of them from above.  We arrived early this morning to grab a good spot and quickly got chatting to the other photographers about what to expect.  We had high hopes but sadly were rather disappointed as almost all the aircraft remained tantalisingly distant.  Having said that, it was a fun day and we enjoyed lots of banter with our fellow photographers.  Some of the best entertainment took place when various radio messages told us that aircraft would be arriving from a particular direction.  Time and again the planes then crept up on us from behind, finding us all staring intently at the wrong horizon.  Needless to say, we found it most amusing that someone in Eastbourne evidently didn't know the difference between east and west!

It's not often you find yourself watching the pilot of an aircraft from above!

The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight were one of the highlights of the day. It was lovely to see the Lancaster back in action after its engine fire last year

I couldn't visit Beachy Head and not take a photo of its colourful lighthouse, especially against that blue-green sea

This view really reflects the power of these machines. Love the lighthouse against blue water as well.
Thank you for sharing Helen

Thanks Jon. It was lovely to see them from this angle. Apparently usually there are many more close passes allowing shots like this but it wasn't to be today.

Thanks Jacki. It was a fun day, although it was blowing a gale up there - I was very grateful for all the clothes I took with me just in case!!

Thank you Jay! We were rather disappointed with the day (I think the pilots were staying further away than in previous years because of rule changes after the Airshow crash at Shoreham last year) so I was pleased to have anything useable at the end of the day!

These are truly remarkable captures, even though, as you say, conditions were not so favorable as before.....Top-notch camera work! Thanks for sharing!
