I'd already decided to have a much needed day off today, although my plans for the day rather depended on the weather. When I peeked out through the curtains early this morning I found blue sky and sunshine - perfect for a trip to Colchester Zoo. I didn't attempt to do the whole zoo on this occasion, but spent more time with a small number of animals to try and capture their best side. The sunshine had brought out the tamarins and marmosets and they were kind enough to pose for me.
When I reached the chimpanzees they were enclosed in their sleeping quarters while the keepers cleaned out their day quarters and put out fresh food. They were gathered together in twos and threes, grooming each other and I was able to catch this thoughtful portrait of one of them.
As the afternoon wore on the sun dropped lower in the sky, casting a warm glow over the zoo. The lions were doing what all cats do on such occasions, lolling around in sunny spots. The way the light was shining through their fur was just irresistible.
I finally ended up by the meerkats who were almost all on sentry duty in the sunshine. It's now almost impossible to distinguish the adults from the youngsters who were born back in March and I was spoilt for choice with seventeen cute face to aim my camera at!
