Raiding the button tin

by Helen Hooker February. 16, 2017 2033 views

A natural photo opportunity didn't present itself today so I decided to shoot a still life picture instead.  I've often raided my tin of buttons to create images in the past, although I haven't done so for over two years now.   This composition popped into my head a few days ago so I've been saving it up for a day like today.  Once upon a time I would have either made use of natural light and a reflector or some torchlight for illumination but today I chose two flashes instead.  By balancing the power output of them and their distance from the pile of buttons I was able to eliminate any harsh shadows and create some all-round illumination.  The whole set up only took twenty minutes from start to finish - so much simpler than messing around with a torch!

Thank you so much Camellia! My set up is pretty simple really - the buttons are on a piece of white paper, curved to create a smooth background, with a flash on each side. I'll see if I can come up with a behind the scenes post when I get some time 😊

Love the simplicity and minimalist approach.
Helen, would like to see a tutorial about this! Can we work on posting step by step guides for creating this exact setup? Interested in hearing your background setup (what kind of cloth or material you used), your lighting and settings...etc

Thanks Ram! The background is just some white paper - nothing fancy. I'd be up for creating a tutorial on this at some point. I've got loads of ideas for PB articles but am lacking the time to write them at the moment!
