Making honey, whatever the weather

Most of the UK was trying to hide away in the shade, away from the stifling heatwave today. In contrast, the bees were still foraging away in our garden this afternoon, preparing to make honey no matter how hot it is. I spent a few minutes following one particular bee around the lavender flowers, trying to catch it on camera.

What really surprised me when I imported the photos onto my computer were the shots where I'd caught the bee's wings in motion. I'd used a shutter speed of 1/1000 of a second where possible and from these pictures it's evident that even this isn't fast enough to freeze the motion in a bee's wings!

I wonder what shutter speed is needed to freeze a bee's wings in flight?!

Beautiful photos, as always!  I love the color of lavender.  Re shutter speed: I suppose it's all a process of trial and error!
