It’s been a while since a steam train travelled through the area so when my friend Barry heard about a visit from the Cathedrals Express he suggested we go and photograph it. We arrived at Witham Station with plenty of time to spare this morning and figured out which platform would give us the best vantage point, without risk of our view being blocked by other trains.
While we waited I took a few shots of other passing trains to get a sense of how to frame things when the main attraction arrived. By now quite a large crowd had gathered on the platforms – very different from when the Cathedrals Express come through our village station in 2014, when there were only three of us in the crowd!
Finally it arrived, belching clouds of steam into the sky and filling the air with noise. I’d chosen a low viewpoint and Barry took a photo of me sitting on the platform. He’s kindly allowed me to include it here and, if you look carefully, you can just see the Cathedrals Express in the far distance.
