Le Mans – Sprint to the finish line

After a few hours sleep we headed back to the circuit this morning, for the last few hours of the 24 hour race. Arriving at a different entrance to the circuit, we continued yesterday’s strategy of walking alongside the circuit, seeking out good vantage points. We found a few spots by the track from where we could catch clear glimpses over the catch fencing and another bar with an outdoor deck upstairs. We cheekily sneaked up the stairs while the security man on the steps was looking the other way and I was able to capture some shots of the cars driving towards us.

I momentarily lost Kevin somewhere near the Dunlop bridge at one point. When he eventually spotted me waving at him I got this reaction!

Our final destination for the day was the start/finish straight, where we bagged a good spot on the terracing. Knowing I wouldn’t get any good shots of the track action from here, I swapped to a shorter lens and focused on the people around me.

This chap's placard is something of an in joke for those who've followed Formula 1 in recent years. It obviously brought good luck as Fernando Alonso's car won the race!

After the race everyone ran onto the track to go and watch the presentation ceremonies. It felt rather rebellious invading the track to us newbies, but apparently this is completely normal at Le Mans! It was great to capture some of the celebrations, but I was also aware that while the race was over, this extremely long working day still hadn’t finished for some people.
