It seems perverse, but there’s something so relaxing about watching bees going about their work. I spent an hour or two in the gardens at Audley End this afternoon and could easily have whiled away much longer observing these industrious little creatures. There were plenty of honey bees on the sedums, although they were so quick I struggled to catch them on camera – for that I need to return earlier in the day when they’re still waking up. However, I caught a few of them on some cone flowers.
Elsewhere there were a good number of butterflies and some enormous bumble bees. The giant bumble bee I photographed seemed to be taking a low power approach to foraging – selecting flowers which were close together so he could simply walk from bloom to bloom rather than flying. With such a large body to get airborne, I guess it probably makes sense from an energy point of view!
