Ready for take-off

After yesterday’s monochrome pictures I opted for colour in a big way today, focusing my attentions on the vivid pink cosmos flowers in our garden. As I knelt nearby, several bumblebees landed on the blooms. They were very diligent in their foraging, taking around a minute to explore each flower, so I aimed my camera and tried my best to focus on their eyes. Naturally there were lots of failures - precision is almost impossible when photographing such fast-moving creatures at such close quarters. However, the shot that really made me smile was the third picture I’ve shared here, where I was lucky enough to catch one of the bumblebees stretching its legs immediately before take-off.

A bumblebee on tiptoe, fantastic.  Having tried and failed miserably to get a sharp macro of one of these in a lethargic state I know this is not easy.  Well done Helen.
