Success and failure

Looking back at the montage of the nine most popular pictures I posted on my architecture account on Instagram in 2019, I realised a few weeks ago that I photographed many, many churches last year. A friend (who also shoots churches) and I discussed this on Instagram at the time and we both agreed we needed to shoot a greater variety of architecture this year. We’re now just three weeks into the new year and, as of today, I’ve already photographed seven different churches. While some of the photos have been a success, my resolution to shoot fewer churches has been a total failure! Oh well, there are eleven more months in which to do better…

Today we visited Waltham Abbey to see my friends Sharon and Andrew at the wool show there. Afterwards we headed into the town for some lunch and popped into the Abbey too – church number seven of 2020. I only had my prime lens project 15mm lens with me, but that creative restriction certainly didn’t stop me finding photographic possibilities. Yes, with a longer lens I could have zoomed in on smaller details, but having just this lens focused my compositional eye on what would work at 15mm. Of course, there’s nothing to stop me going back another time with a telephoto lens – I’m certain I could find some fabulous details in that gloriously painted ceiling!
