A day with the animals

I treated myself to a little animal photography time, something I haven’t done for ages. My destination was the Paradise Wildlife Park, a zoo not far from home, but one I haven’t visited before. It’s a relatively small zoo but I still found plenty of interesting characters to photograph.

As ever, the meerkats were tremendously entertaining, but my favourites today were the lions. At most wildlife parks you usually find yourself a long distance from the big cats, often behind wire fences. Here though a lot of the enclosure is surrounded by large windows and the lions are quite at ease sitting close to them. As a result I was able to observe them from just a few feet away and I came to the conclusion they are incredibly similar to Lucy in their behaviour – just much bigger and fiercer!

I took this photo while sitting about four feet from the lioness - something you could never do in the wild!

It seems even lions feel the need to eat grass to get rid of furballs!

I've definitely seen Lucy do this pose!

I also had a couple of close encounters with the lemurs and baboons, who were incredibly photogenic. The lemur I photographed seemed most surprised to find me looking through the glass and spent several minutes sizing me up with a good hard stare!
