For many years Riyaz and I have been talking about photographing his brother’s Nissan Figaro, perhaps with the idea of creating a calendar from the images. Today we finally met up on a sunny day at Hatfield Forest for our photoshoot!
Nissan only made 20,000 of these diminutive cars, manufacturing them all in 1991. As a result you see very few of them on the road today. For a while Riyaz and his brother imported them into the UK, so if you see one on the roads here there’s a sporting chance it could be one they sold!
While the styling may look very retro, the Figaro was actually based upon the Nissan Micra, which means they’re reliable and surprisingly easy to maintain almost thirty years later. It may have humble underpinnings, but in comparison to many cars of the time it had some welcome luxuries, including air conditioning and a CD player – I didn’t own a car with those until several years later! Riyaz and I both took lots of photos, having great fun seeking out all the little details and interesting lines.
After lunch we changed locations, heading over to the village of Henham to shoot outside the church. This is a lovely spot for photography and we were lucky to find the area in front of the church clear of other cars.
