Bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz

Late January 2017 - The Bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz in the French Basque Country (Iparralde).

Winter storms stopped for a day, allowing me to go explore and check the views of the Bay form the hill of Saint-Barbe, and of course, take some shots.

I was happily surprised to find some surfers. I had no idea this was a surf spot. They were gathered on the peak, waiting for their turn. At first one would look and think, "what are those people doing there? I see no waves?! "...Well, this is a perfect way to understand that surfing is not just about surfing waves. First, just to reach this peak, it takes about 20 minute of paddling, which already is a nice exercise for a sunday afternoon. But most importantly, it is a good moment to socialize and relax from your everyday stressed routine..

I took this shot while going up the hill for the first time, after I looked back and realised I could spot the surfers through the trees. After a few seconds, I saw one surfer paddling and I quickly pull my camera to get the shot. I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right moment to capture it. This picture made my day. Besides from the difficulty to time the shot to perfectly fit the surfer in the gap between the trees, I really appreciate the depth of it, showing the trees in the front, the surfer giving some movement, and the successive layers of houses and hills while the fog emerges.

When the waves are scarce, none goes unridden
