Have you ever read the book 'Timeline' written by Michael Crichton?
Wikipedia : 'Timeline is a science fiction novel by Michael Crichton that was published in November 1999. It tells the story of a group of history students who travel to 14th-century France to rescue their professor. The book follows in Crichton's long history of combining technical details and action in his books, addressing quantum and multiverse theory.'
I loved this book, because I love the idea to travel into another century by a time-machine.
Sometimes I'm asking myself : If I had the chance to go back to the medieval period by a time-machine, would I ?
YES.................BUT................. - because I know, the middle ages in Europe were a damn violant and bloody period, with extremely bad medical health care, I wouldn't go without a : 'Beam me up Scotty' - opportunity. (In my case a 'beam me back'- opportunity). :-)
Okay, yesterday I had the chance to step into another century without any danger. There was a medieval age market in Braunfels, an one hour drive from my home.

Braunfels with the castle in the background
Braunfels is a pretty little town in the county Hessen, District Limburg-Weilburg, first mentioned in 1246, with an impressive castle, which is build on a crest of a basalt rock. The old town is showing an ensemble of half-timbered buildings.

Old town market place
The spectaculum was located in the spa gardens of the town. A lot of traders were selling their handicrafts,

Handforged knifes

Home-made jam

Pot-Seller
and a lot of sales-stands offered delicacies and of cause a lot of Met was consumed. (Better to stay away from it, if you arrived by car !)

Suckling pig

Roasted salmon

Selection of available drinks.
The greatest fun for me was, to see all those different characters.

One of Robin Hood's men

The friendly knave

The scholar

The poor beggar

The falconer

Female falconer

A juggler with his assistant

The juggler

The stilt walker

The musicians

The standard-bearer

Taking care
But no doubt, the absolute highlight was the Knights' Tournament.
It was really great to see how much fun all the participants had.

Three red knights

The black knight

Fighting yellow knight

The fire ring exercise

Catching the ring

Giving everything

Failed exercise

Riding through the fire

Relaxed - isn't there a bit of Sean Connery in this man ?
I made so many photos from this whole event, maybe I will show single ones in some other postings. I had a great day in the medieval period and I think everybody who had been there yesterday, enjoyed it as much as I did.
Nice to make the link with "timeline" by Michael Crichton, my favorit writher. Thank you for letting me see this event trough your camera.
Thanks so much Marij! Loved all the books of Crichton, so sad, that he is no more alive.
