Mont st michel has an area of 4km2, in the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel located between Brittany and the Normandy peninsula of Cotentin at the bottom of the Normand-Breton gulf. Mont-Saint-Michel began in 708, when Bishop Aubert erected a first sanctuary on the Mont-Tombe in honour of the Archangel. In 966, Benedictines settled there at the request of the Duke of Normandy, Richard I - Mont St Michel, the city of books: since the end of the 10th S. the Benedictines hold an Abbey, a monastery with manuscripts in a scriptorium and a library.
