My Essential Qualities and Personality

Athletic

As a whole this picture represents my love and passion for sports and tells a story of how sports shaped who I am today. The first thing I noticed upon capturing this picture is the rigid texture of the basketball. The old, worn down basketball shows it's been through alot but still continues to move forward. It smoothly guides the viewer to the still worn down yet softer looking football. The hockey stick organizes this piece and keeps everything together. I like to be organized and prefer to have things planned out beforehand. The different shoe types exhibit the different sides of my personality: red being the sympathetic side of me, pink/blue showing my creative side, and the green represents the growth that I’m going through during this stage of my life. The empty space above was intended to portray the unknown future that lies ahead for all of us. Whatever makes you uncomfortable is your biggest opportunity for growth.

Faithful

Faithful

This stained-glass window represents how my faith plays an important part in my life. The use of lines effectively conveys my message because it causes the viewer to look down the entirely of the piece, implying that religion is currently very important to me but will also be for the rest of my life. The perspective also contributes to this aspect because the angle that this image was taken at creates the movement. The light shining through the window exhibits how religion is the gateway to salvation. The colors of the glass seem to bleed into the building itself showing how religion becomes apart of all its followers. I believe the responsive chord that the audience will get from this piece will be that of religious significance and how that has impacted the author's life in some way.

Imaginative

Imaginative

The emotion I felt as I was capturing this beautiful picture is that of reassurance. One can’t help but feel at ease upon laying eyes on this specific point in time. The sunlight bouncing off the water directs the viewer’s eyes directly towards the ball of light. The foreground contains a lot of wild looking brush and some dead grass. This is overshadowed by the gleaming rays of sunshine that bursts out from our energy source. This use of light shows how your imagination knows no bounds. “Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.”-Albert Einstein. The calming effect of the sun peering over the horizon makes one feel warm and safe on the inside. One’s imagination is endless like the exent of the horizon shown in this image. The trees are captured asymmetrically because from this perspective they seem to be drawn towards the sun, being it is their source of food, just as the viewer is. Your imagination can take you out of this world for a moment, and that reflective dream like state is conveyed here through a beautiful picture of the sun setting over Lake Michigan.

Well-Mannered

This picture shows my well-mannered and sophisticated side. When someone is seen dressed formally on campus, it's something that most definitely stands out from the crowd. There is a sense of confidence here in how I am sticking my chin out towards the viewer. The use of color strongly suggests the theme of confidence. The smooth silk pattern of the tie adds to the overall mature feel of this image. The small pin located on the right side of the the suit coat is my Delta Upsilon Fraternity pin, presenting another reason as to why manners are important to me. The fraternity takes great pride in being considered the gentlemen’s of the campus. The pin is slightly out of focus to intentionally draw the reader towards the center of the picture. The lines of the suit jacket and tie help facilitate the reader's eyes up and down the picture. The neatness and cleanliness of the suit causes the reader, from previous experiences, to associate said traits with someone who is organized, well put together. If I posed in basketball shorts and a cotton shirt I’d be portrayed as sloppy or unorganized. This image is taken at a very shallow space to place emphasis on the textures of the tie and shirt, which are soft and smooth in appearance.

Studious

This image represents my quality of being very studious. I purposely arranged the pencils in such a way that would imply organization as well as driving the audience’s eye towards the laptop and around the rest of the picture. The pile of colored pencils represent my creative side. I really enjoy being able just draw whatever is on my mind or write whatever I’m thinking about in that point in time without anyone judging, it's very therapeutic for me. The colored pencils are of all sizes whereas the normal graphite pencils are all the exact same, further exemplifying the notion of me having an organized side as well as an expressive side when it comes to my studies. The coffee mug and the headphones are placed towards the back of the piece to symbolize my struggle with attention and how I don’t talk about it much. I have a mild form of ADD and coffee helps guide me cause me to focus as well as the headphones drown out any outside noise. These items are also opposites of one another in regards to their color. White symbolizes hope and light, and black symbolizes evil and fear, usually carrying a negative connotation. These were placed next to one another to illustrate the mental growth and emotions that being a student causes. Studying for hours on end stressing about a big test or project deadline is not a fun way to spend your Sunday night. However, once you’re rewarded for your hard work with a good grade, you feel at peace and relieved with the success you receive from the sacrifices you made.

Supportive

This image clearly shows a book holding up all of the other books in its respective row. I am someone that a lot of my friends lean on for advice and support. The centerpiece of this photo is the book and motion is depicted by the other books that are leaning on it. One can visualize in their head what would happen if that one small book wasn’t there holding the others up. The diagonal line that the spine of the book creates aids the viewers in effectively seeing the message that is intended here. The more dark shade of the background contrasts the lighter shade of the foreground which in turn causes the book to stand out even more.

Reassuring

There are times, especially while being in college, where your future seems to be very up in the air. The foreground is very cluttered and full of twigs and rocks. This represents the various obstacles in one’s life that may hinder one from reaching their goals. The dead branches have a very rough and pointed texture, which shows how those obstacles can be thorns in one's life. The rocks in the middle ground are more obstacles that can slow you down. This picture purposefully gets more into focus as the viewer looks deeper into the picture to show that although you may not know what you’re doing with your life at this particular moment, realize you’ll get to where you need to be and everything will work out just fine. The emptiness and vastness of the sky helps the viewer stay focused on the bottom two thirds of the picture.

...

Competitive

This picture embodies my competitive spirit and overall passion for running. Running brings out the best in me and teaches me to work hard for what I want. I’ve learned through participating in athletics that you get out what you put in. The medals are placed on the outside to show the rewards the you receive for all the hard work that you put in. This is why the running shoes are in the middle and are the focus of the picture. The bright colors of the shoe causes the viewer to be drawn to them first. This picture has an overall shallow depth and is organized in a way that brings the reader around entire piece. The bib numbers represent the countless races that i’ve competed in over my career. Running is a great metaphor for life as well. You can’t let yourself get lazy, or else you won’t achieve anything and won’t get anywhere. Things can get tough sometimes and it won’t always go your way, but hard work ALWAYS pays off.

Reflective

This is one of my favorite pictures that I captured. The viewer feels nostalgic as they gaze at the sun casting its light over Carthage. To me, this picture represents my time here at Carthage. I’ve loved it here ever since I moved in freshman year and am cherishing every moment I have as a student. I understand that college flies by, and I want to make the most of the time I have left here. The rays from the sun direct the audience’s eyes right to it. The overall depth of this picture is fairly deep. The diagonal railing helps the reader circulate about the image. Just looking at this picture sends me deep into thought. I think college students can get caught up in worrying about their future, rightfully so of course, but I believe it's equally important to have awareness of the good times we are experiencing now.

Perseverance

One of my best qualities is perseverance. Everyone has something troubling about their past, something that shapes them into the version of themselves that they are today. Stairs is very symbolic of tackling your problems on a day by day basis. The depth of this picture starts of very shallow and then slowly increases as the viewer follows the staircase. The light on top of each stop illustrates how you slowly improve as you progress further in whatever you’re enduring. The texture of the stairs themselves is very rough in appearance, which shows how sometimes things can get tough in life, but life itself always goes on. The rather boring and bland color of the ascending stairs represents the process of getting through something and how it can be quite tedious and mundane at times. At the very least the viewer gets a sense of overcoming something upon looking at this piece.
