Hsinchu Night Market Entrance

You choose the food you want (lots of seafood tempura, tofu, meat, squid, cabbage, etc, and they slice it for you, braise it and give it you back in a soup. Tasty and healthy... I think.

Bao: traditional Taiwanese steamed 'burger'. An open steamed bun, filled with peanut shavings, sweet sauce and pork belly. Absolutely delicious!

Stinky Tofu: fermented Tofu. The smell is so hideous, I haven't brought myself to try it yet - but must do before we leave, in March!

Japanese style squid balls with fish flakes. James loves these.

Red bean soup with barley, red beans and tangyuan (rice flour balls). These are usually eaten during lantern festival or any time there is a family reunion, as tangyuan is a homophone in chinese pinyin for 'union'. It's lovely and sweet, definitely one of my favourites in Taiwan.

James' addiction.
