Project 365: My Mundane Life - Day 99

It was lovely Spring day, above normal temperatures for this time of year and a little windy. I decided to make my lunch break a picnic lunch and headed to a small park just a couple of miles from my office. The park is really a nature area - preserved prairie and wetlands. The birdsong drowned out the traffic noise as I walked and continued with this week's reflection experiment.

Speaking of reflection... I couldn't help but wonder why this area wasn't developed into apartment homes, mixed use commercial or an office park as it sits on 22 acres. The small shelter at the park entrance states that the township in which this park is situated contains the least amount of park acres per capita of any township in our county. Just a few miles away a stand of trees (about 15 acres) is about to be demolished by a developer. This acreage is in an already very congested area of our city, but it provides a buffer between the commercial development to the east and the residential neighborhoods to the west. The neighbors fought it, and even though I don't live in the neighborhood (I drive through it on my commute to and from work), I wrote emails to my on city representative. Earlier this week, the residents lost to moneyed interests. I am saddened by this but if we want to protect our places of solitude, wilderness, and nature in general we must continue fighting or we will all choke to death.
