Happy New Year!

My first blog of 2019! After a quiet day on the first day of the year, we ventured to the heart our city. The Indiana Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, located in the very center of Indianapolis, was dedicated in 1902 and was originally meant to honor Indiana veterans of the American Civil War. However, the honor was extended to those who served in the American Revolutionary War and territorial conflicts that led the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War, and the Spanish-American War. It is the first monument in the United Stated to be dedicated to the common soldier.

However, the day after Thanksgiving the monument is source of celebration with its annual tradition of Circle of Lights, beginning in 1962. The monument is decked in 52 strands of garland containing 4,784 lights.
