Playing in the Dirt with a Purpose

This year I decided to volunteer with a local group whose mission is to improve the canopy over our city and assist in creating more green space. This is done by working with local neighborhoods and city parks to plant more trees, develop pocket parks and pick up trash. As an "ambassador," I am committing more time than the occasional project. And part of my responsibility, if I chose, is to photograph the even. Seems like the natural choice.

Yesterday kicked off the tree-planting season with projects in neighborhoods all over the city. For the project I assisted, 42 trees were planted with the help of 37 volunteers! Not a bad showing considering the prediction for rain and high wind gusts, but the weather cooperated. The rain didn't start until well after the project was completed.

I'm always so happy to hear about projects like this. Now I'm inspired to see if there are any similar initiatives in my city!
