Stockport Air Raid Shelters

Much like the Ramsgate Tunnels that I visited a few weeks ago, these tunnels below the streets of Stockport were dug especually to provide air protection to local people during WWII. Also like Ramsgate the Government refused permission for them to go ahead with digging but the local council went ahead anyway. There were four sets of tunnels dug in to the red sandstone and they were 7' wide by 7' high as this was found to be the best dimensions for the tunnels to be self supporting.

The largest tunnel at Chestergate is open as a museum with self guided audio tours to give a glimpse of life at the time.
