B26 Marauder Hell's Belle

The Martin Marauder was a twin engined American medium bomber in WWII. This particular aircraft was based at Great Dunmow in Essex and took off in poor weather as part of a raid on V1 sites in France on 26th January 1944. Unfortunately the weather took a serious turn for the worse such that the raid was called off and all planes were ordered to turn for home. The bad weather caused severe icing on the wings of Hell's Belle which led it to crash near Crowborough with, tragically, the loss of all crew. A memorial has now been put in place at the Bricklayer's Arms which is close to the crash site.

Nice catch Peter. Amazing what's out there. Is there any chance you send me a shot of it please as I would like to show it to Bob Seevers ex ASB.
