More Surfing

We've had a few more surfing sessions since the last lot of photos. We've been going out with Discovery Surf School [discoverysurf.com] who have provided 1:1 instruction. If you look back at the photos [photoblog.com]from the Surfable/Breaking the Barrier event you'll see that Archie now is on a smaller board without a coach standing on the back - instead he gets pushed into the wave and then is on his own. He's quite happy to scoot along on his tummy or kneel and with a lot of encouragement and yelling from us will occasionally stand.

We really are very grateful to the guys at Discovery Surf School. We'd never have tried surfing with Archie (severely autistic, non-verbal, challenging behaviours
and limited awareness of danger- surfing didn't exactly leap out as a potential activity) without the surfers going out of their way to encourage participation. He gets a real buzz from it - he's spent a lot of this afternoon looking at photos of him surfing. I always think his autism isn't such a problem in itself, it's a pain when it stops him being able to do things, especially fun stuff, so these sorts of activities make a real difference to his life and all our lives. It seems like
a small thing, but when I became a Mum I imagined doing things that were fun with the kids, not hours of autism therapies - I feel that this year, with horse riding and surfing and lots of trips out we're finally getting the balance right.

I think these shots with Archie out on the board riding a wave say it all. Wonderful.
