232. English Export

The export I have selected as representative of England is the Land Rover. It's made right in the middle of the country and is exported all over the world. They have a reputation for being particularly robust - so much so that some owners refer to other 4X4s as disposables. I am always amazed at the number of times Land Rovers crop up in American films. When you consider how many great vehicles that country produces, I think that says something about it as a product.

There are though two great ironies in choosing the Land Rover as a quintessentially English export. The first is that if ever a country didn't need Land Rovers it was surely England: There are very few sizeable hills, let alone mountains and parts of the country are officially 10% flatter than a professional grade snooker table. And, as you are never more than 10 metres away from some state-sponsored tarmac, there's very little reason for a four wheel drive.

The other irony is that Land Rover is no longer an English company having been bought by India's Tata Motors. Still, I guess with their varied terrain, India probably has more need for Land Rover than England.
