266. Christmas Eve 1968

This is a recreation of one of my favourite photographs, Earthrise from Apollo 8 by astronaut Frank Borman [history.nasa.gov].

The tennis ball and the football are roughly the same scale as the Moon and the Earth, so they make a good comparison. Unfortunately I just couldn't get close enough to “the Moon” to get the same curvature, so we'll just need to imagine that I am orbiting from slightly further out than Mr Borman. And of course, if the textures were the same then the moon would have day-glow yellow fluff reaching hundreds of miles into the air.

I realise that my shot was never going to capture the majesty of the original. But it did at least come in with a cheaper budget. The Apollo 8 project cost $310m in 1968 (probably closer to $2,000m today). The sports ball project cost just 39p for a cheap tennis ball as we already had the football.

I did try it in b&w, but preferred to depart from the original in having bright blue and bright yellow.

Very creative! I understand there are still some cameras on the moon from the landings there - they just brought back the film. What a waste of a good camera!!

Brilliant! All you have to do now is invent Teflon or tennis-ball rock and NASA will be getting worried.
