The Introverted Side of Water

by Jarvo J November. 25, 2011 4004 views

As molecules go, the simple water molecule, H20, is normally pretty sociable; one might even say gregarious (certainly when mixed with sodium or magnesium). It regularly interacts with other substances either by forming new types of molecule or by simply mixing with them; keeping its own identity but happily being part of a cosmopolitan group.

However, water does not like silicone. The two just don't mix. Here we see water with some coloured sand that has been impregnated with silicone. The water withdraws into it's own shell to get away from its adversary.

The sand is marketed as Hydrophobic, because it doesn't get wet. Even when completely submerged, it comes up bone dry.
