Ultimate Sacrifice?

The mother spider that was featured the other day [photoblog.com] is dead. But she has done her job and around her body are a dozen or more babies.

It's not usual for the mother spider to die at this point; in some species the young will even feast on their carers carcass. I do not know whether this will happen here or not, to be honest, I'm not 100% sure that it is actually the Spitting Spider as I said. If these do turn out to be cannibalistic critters, I'll post any evidence on here.

      i like them ^_^ but they don't stop for god sakes! I always ask them to stop but they don't...maybe I should ask them nicely ;)))

      Wow, that's strange and bizarre....but nature has ways we don't understand. Interesting post, Jon....and yes, would love to hear if there's more to the story...

      coool... me and my brother we have a lot of spiders (not like these) and we try to photograph them.. they are nice but I don't like them so much, I prefer other bugs. But amazing shots wow

      Hmmm....I believe the female eats the male after mating ... So fair play is a dual in this instance ...great images Jon.
