What Do You Call Them?

by Jarvo J September. 26, 2012 7795 views

Estimates vary, but they've been hundreds of millions of years with little evolutionary change. In all this time it's not surprising that they've picked up a few names. It's reckoned that they have about 150 names in English alone, including: Armadillo Bug, Boat Builder, Butcher Boy, Butchy Boy, Carpenter, Cafner, Charlie Cheese Louse, Cheeselog, Cheesybob, Cheesy Bug, Cheesy Hog, Chucky Pig, Chuggypig, Coffin Cutter, Doodlebug, Gramersow, Oniscidea, Peelabola, Penny Sow, Pill Bug, Pollydishwasher, Potato Bug, Roll Up Bug, Roly-Poly, Slater, Sow Bug, Wood Bug, Woodlouse, Wood Pig, Yekersterse. What do you call them?

We (prefer not to) call them ... "pissebedden" (literally translated: "urination beds")
The Flemisch name originates from the folk medicine, around the end of the Middle Ages were "pissebedden" used to improve/ facilitate urinating /pee.
