Lao monk on Don Dhet

In the southern part of Laos are the 4000 islands. Laos has no coastline but the Mekong runs the length of the country and in the south bordering Cambodia, depending on the height of the river, you can find a number of islands. One of the last places I stayed in Laos was Don Khon, a small, beautiful island with no paved roads and electricity only after 6pm.
In the afternoon, after the rain had stopped, I went out on a bike to cross the bridge to Don Dhet with a new friend Boby on a photographic expedition. We made a good decision to deviate from the circular path around the island to cut across the middle and this is where we found a Wat. Some of the monks were returning back to the temple and with their orange robes they made a fantastic contrast with the lush green background.

The monk in this photo agreed to let me take his photo but he wasn't too comfortable with looking at the camera. I think it works well as he looks thoughtful and meditative. The boy following him loved the idea of being photographed and even though the focus is not on him you can tell he has a beaming smile on his face. Further down the path is a water buffalo and in the far distance you can just make out the orange robes of two more monks.
