Watch your step

Around Phonsavan and the Plain of Jars [photoblog.com], where the US bombing had been at its worst, there has been a great deal of work to try and clean up the area and make it safe for the people who live there.
One of the main NGO's is the Mines Advisory Group (MAG). When visiting the Plain of Jars, an area that can be still quite dangerous, it is advised to stick to the well worn tracks. These markers are placed on the path to tell you that if you stay to the right of the stone, that is an area that has been cleared below the surface. Outside of the marker is land cleared on the surface only so there will always be the chance of UXO underneath.
It reminds you just how serious a problem it still is.
On the day we were visiting the Jars, we were constantly hearing explosions; our guide told us it was the MAG detonating bombies that had been found around the area.
