A picnic on Etna

Not the first place you might think of for a picnic, Etna isn't green or lush, nor does it conform to the usual notion of picturesque.
It was a surreal experience to be climbing up the side of of a live volcano; we weren't walking on grass or path, it was a loose kind of black lava gravel interspersed with clumps of hardy grasses.
The day was foggy, which added to the general strangeness,
some of the bigger rocks were hot to the touch as they were still cooling from when they had been spewed out from the craters and the higher you climbed the more alien the landscape became.
Surreal picnic? Why not!
