I noticed this symbol dotted around and incorporated into the architecture of some of the traditional buildings in Hanoi. Not always as large and as obvious as in this photograph, sometimes it was built into the pillars of a gate or bridge.
I'd thought maybe it was something symbolising the city of Hanoi, but then I saw it quite obviously here built into the wall of a temple in Hue's Imperial City. Later I found out it is one of the Vietnamese symbols for longevity.
