The Chott

If you look on a map of Tunisia, in the south-west of the country just before the start of the Sahara, you will see a huge area that resembles a lake. It is a kind of lake, and during the winter months when it rains (a little) there is some water, but for the most part it is a salt pan.
Apparently they can be a little dangerous to cross, as the surface gives the impression of solidity, but the crust can crack easily giving way to a quagmire of mud beneath.
This one in the south of Tunisia has a solid road causeway, constructed to make it easy and accessible to reach further south into the desert from Tozeur. And like many other sites in the country, is featured in Star Wars: playing the part of Luke Skywalker's home planet.
