The Torii Gate on Miyajima

by Jennifer Patience July. 06, 2012 1870 views

The beautiful torii gate is one of the archetypal images of historic Japan and the reason why Miyajima island is such a popular place to visit.
The real name of the island is actually Itsukushima, Miyajima, meaning Shrine Island, is just a nickname…but has stuck.
It's said that as the island was considered so sacred to maintain the purity no commoners were allowed to set foot on the island and to reach the shrine, pilgrims were ferried over in small boats passing through the torii gate.
