Itsukushima Shrine and torii gate at low tide

The Shinto shrine on Miyajima island near Hiroshima is built on legs or stilts over the water so at high tide it seems to be floating on the water's surface.
As the island was said to be sacred, maintaining the ‘purity’ of the shrine was essential and in the past women were not allowed on the island. Even nowadays births or deaths are not permitted near the shrine and anyone facing either of these prospects are supposed to head to the mainland.
